Why Marketplace Diversification Matters More Than Ever in 2026

June 9, 2026

Why Marketplace Diversification Matters More Than Ever in 2026

One of the most interesting trends we’re seeing in 2026 isn’t just the growth of ecommerce – it’s the changing way consumers discover and buy products online.

According to the latest Australia Post eCommerce Report, Australians spent a record $82.6 billion online in 2025, up 14% year-on-year. More importantly, shoppers spent $18.9 billion through online marketplaces, making marketplaces one of the fastest-growing ecommerce channels in the region. Even more telling, marketplace apps are now used by 69% of Australian shoppers, almost on par with traditional retailer websites at 78%. For brands and retailers, this creates a significant opportunity – but also a strategic challenge.

For many years, businesses focused on building a presence on one or two major channels. Today, consumer behavior is becoming increasingly fragmented. Customers may discover products on one marketplace, compare prices on another, and complete their purchase elsewhere. Australia Post reports that Australians now shop across an average of 16 different online brands each year, a figure that continues to grow.

This shift is changing the conversation. The question is no longer, “Which marketplace should we be on?” The question is, “How do we build a marketplace strategy that doesn’t depend on any single channel?”

The most successful brands we work with are actively diversifying their marketplace footprint. They’re expanding across established channels while testing emerging opportunities, reducing reliance on any one source of traffic or revenue. This approach isn’t just about growth – it’s about resilience.

As competition increases and customer acquisition becomes more challenging, businesses that can adapt quickly to changing shopper behavior will be better positioned for long-term success. Deloitte’s 2026 Global Retail Industry Outlook highlights that retailers are operating in an environment where customer expectations for convenience, value, and personalization continue to rise, making flexibility and channel diversification increasingly important.

The good news is that marketplace expansion has never been more accessible. New channels continue to emerge, marketplaces are becoming more specialized, and technology is making it easier to reach customers wherever they choose to shop.

The brands that will win in 2026 won’t necessarily be those with the largest budgets or the biggest catalogues. They’ll be the ones that build a diversified, adaptable marketplace strategy that allows them to meet customers where they are – today and tomorrow.

As the marketplace landscape continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: diversification is no longer a growth tactic. It’s becoming a business strategy.

 Let’s Map Your Strategy.

In a landscape where diversification is becoming essential, having the right infrastructure in place is key. This is where CrescoData plays a role – helping brands and retailers connect, manage, and scale across multiple marketplaces from a single platform. By simplifying integrations and automating core processes, businesses can expand into new channels with confidence, without adding unnecessary complexity to their operations.

Book a time with our team to explore how you can scale across marketplaces with confidence.
